Vent, Valve & Volt
Half the house lost power

You can fix this

Likely cause: one circuit or a tripped GFCI

If only a room or a few outlets are dead, look for a tripped GFCI. Work through the outlet not working guide.

Why this happens

A single room or a handful of outlets going dead usually points to one circuit, not the utility. Family Handyman notes that a tripped GFCI in another room can cut power to outlets downstream of it. ESFI lists kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors, basements and crawlspaces as places GFCIs are required.

How to fix it

  1. Check every GFCI outlet in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, basement and outside. With dry hands, press RESET on any that are popped out.
  2. Test the dead outlets with a lamp you know works.
  3. If nothing changes, go to the outlet not working guide.

If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician

  • Which room or outlets are dead, and which breaker you think feeds them.
  • That no breaker was tripped and which GFCIs you checked.
