About Vent, Valve & Volt

Vent, Valve & Volt is a troubleshooting site for the three home systems that break most: heating and cooling, plumbing and electrical. Every page starts from a symptom, the way you would describe it to a friend, and walks through a short series of questions to the likely cause.
We publish it as the team behind FourHome, a brand of replacement faucet and shower parts sold on Amazon. That is also how the site makes money: when a plumbing result points to a worn cartridge, stem or seat, it links the FourHome replacement. We say so next to every product box, and we explain the whole arrangement on the how we make money page.
Three rules shape what you read here. First, every fact, number and instruction comes from a source we actually read, and that source is listed at the bottom of the page. Second, instructions stop at what a homeowner can do safely. Electrical results never go past resetting a breaker or a GFCI and using a tester. Heating and cooling results never touch refrigerant, capacitors or burners. Any gas smell means leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Third, we do not invent people, reviews, test results or prices. There are no fake experts here, and the photographs are illustrations, not pictures of real jobs or customers.
Brand names such as Moen, Delta, Kohler, Pfister, Carrier and Trane appear only to identify compatible parts or to explain what a manufacturer's own support page says. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
If a result is wrong, unclear or missing a symptom you searched for, tell us through the form on the checklist page. The site improves from those notes.
