Call an electrician: a buzzing panel or breaker
A buzzing panel or breaker is a sign of a loose connection or a failing breaker. Do not open the panel. Call a licensed electrician.
Why this happens
Siemens lists noisy circuit breakers as a reason to call an electrician. This Old House says buzzing often indicates loose connections or arcing. Only the hinged panel door is meant for homeowners; the metal cover behind it is for electricians.
What to do right now
- Do not open the metal cover inside the panel, and do not touch a breaker that is buzzing or warm.
- From the open hinged door, note which breaker the sound seems to come from, if you can tell without touching.
- Keep people away from the panel.
- Call a licensed electrician. If it gets louder, starts smelling or smokes, leave and call 911.
What to tell the licensed electrician
- Which breaker buzzes, if you could tell, and what it feeds.
- Whether the sound is constant or only when something runs.
- Any breakers that have tripped recently, and any heat or smell.
- The panel brand from the label on the door.
