Stop: buzzing with heat, smell or sparks
A buzz with heat, a burning smell, sparks or crackling means a connection is overheating. Breaker off, unplug, and call a licensed electrician.
Why this happens
Family Handyman says to go straight to the panel, shut off the breaker for that circuit, unplug, and call a licensed electrician when an outlet sparks or smells. ESFI lists a burning smell and warm outlets as warning signs.
What to do right now
- If you see smoke or flames, get out, stay out and call 911.
- At the panel, open only the hinged door. Never remove the metal cover behind it; that cover is for electricians. Keep your hands dry and do not stand on a wet floor.
- Switch OFF the breaker for that outlet or switch.
- With the breaker off, unplug anything in the outlet.
- Leave the breaker off and call a licensed electrician.
What to tell the licensed electrician
- What you noticed: heat, smell, sparks or crackling, and when.
- Which breaker you turned off and what else lost power.
- What was plugged in or switched on.
