You can fix this
Likely cause: a bulb or a bulb and dimmer mismatch
A light that buzzes only when dimmed, or only with certain bulbs, usually has a bulb that is failing or not suited to the dimmer. Swap the bulb first.
Why this happens
Lowe's explains that bulbs may begin to buzz just before they burn out, and that bulbs and dimmers that are not compatible can buzz. For LEDs on a dimmer, Pedernales Electric Cooperative recommends bulbs marked dimmable with a compatible dimmer.
How to fix it
- Turn the switch off and let the bulb cool.
- Replace the bulb with a new one. On a dimmer, use LEDs marked dimmable, and the same type in every socket.
- Listen again at full and at low brightness.
- If it still buzzes with compatible bulbs, the dimmer may be the problem. Replacing a dimmer is work for a licensed electrician.
When to stop. If the dimmer gets hot, smells or crackles, turn the breaker off and call a licensed electrician.
If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician
- That it buzzes only when dimmed, and which bulbs you tried.
- The dimmer brand and model if printed on it.
- Whether the dimmer feels warm.
