This one needs a licensed pro
Likely cause: a loose connection or arcing
A steady buzz from an outlet, switch or fixture, even with nothing running, often means a loose connection. Turn the breaker off and call a licensed electrician.
Why this happens
This Old House says buzzing outlets and switches often indicate loose connections or arcing. NFPA found arcing was the heat source in 64% of home electrical fires in 2020 to 2024. Tightening connections means opening the box, which is a job for a licensed electrician.
What to do right now
- Stop using the outlet, switch or fixture.
- Unplug anything plugged into the outlet.
- At the panel, open only the hinged door. Never remove the metal cover behind it; that cover is for electricians. Keep your hands dry and do not stand on a wet floor.
- Switch OFF the breaker for it and leave it off.
- Call a licensed electrician. Do not take the cover plate off.
When to stop. Heat, a burning smell or crackling: breaker off now, and leave and call 911 if there is smoke.
What to tell the licensed electrician
- Which outlet, switch or fixture buzzes, and whether it buzzes with nothing running.
- Which breaker you turned off.
- Any warmth, flicker or smell nearby.
- Whether you have seen AL or Aluminum printed on cable jackets.
