Likely cause: a worn stem in a two or three-handle valve
On two and three-handle tub and shower valves, a stiff handle means the stem on that side is worn or crusted. Replace the stem, and its seat while you are there.
Why this happens
Moen ties a stiff handle to debris, mineral buildup or a damaged seal inside the valve part the handle turns. On two and three-handle tub and shower valves that part is a stem, and Delta names worn seats, springs and stem assemblies as the primary culprits when these valves leak, and a stem that has gone stiff is replaced the same way. Stems are brand-specific and usually different for hot and cold.
How to fix it
- Shut off the water at the main if the valve has no stops. Cover the drain.
- Remove the stiff handle, unscrew the bonnet nut and back the stem out.
- Match the old stem by brand, length and the broach (the splined tip the handle fits on) using the identification index below.
- Replace the seat and spring or bibb seat in the valve body, then install the new stem.
- Reassemble, turn the water on and test. If you grease anything, use silicone grease only.
When to stop. If the stem will not back out or the threads strip, stop. On an old valve Delta's advice is to replace the whole valve, which is a plumber's job.

If the stiff handle is the middle one on a three-handle valve, you need a diverter stem. Hot and cold stems are often different.
