Vent, Valve & Volt
Shower handle hard to turn, pull or push

You can fix this

Likely cause: a worn Moen 1224 cartridge

On Moen two-handle valves, Moen's fix for a stiff handle is to replace the 1224 cartridge on that side.

Why this happens

Moen says a hard-to-operate handle is usually caused by sediment or debris in the cartridge, mineral buildup or a damaged seal. For two-handle valves, Moen's answer is to replace the 1224 cartridge. Moen's spout-drip guidance also notes that two-handle faucets have two cartridges, one per side.

How to fix it

  1. Shut off the water to the shower at the main if the valve has no stops. Cover the drain.
  2. Remove the stiff handle and its trim sleeve.
  3. Unscrew the cartridge and pull it straight out. Keep track of hot versus cold.
  4. Install the new 1224, reassemble, turn the water on and test.
  5. If the other handle is the same age and also stiff, replace it too.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • It is a Moen two-handle shower, and which handle is stiff.
  • Whether you replaced the 1224 cartridge.
  • Whether the main had to be shut off.
