Vent, Valve & Volt
Shower handle hard to turn, pull or push

You can fix this

Likely cause: a dry or dirty Moen 1225 cartridge

Moen's pull-push shower handles usually use the 1225 cartridge. Moen says a stiff one can be cleaned and lubricated with silicone grease before you replace it.

Why this happens

Moen says a handle that is difficult to operate is usually caused by sediment or debris in the cartridge, mineral buildup or a damaged seal. For one-handle valves with the 1225 cartridge, Moen's fix is to lubricate it with silicone grease, its part 99915. Moen says the 1255 and 4000 cartridges are replace-only, and warns never to use a petroleum-based lubricant.

How to fix it

  1. Shut off the water to the shower at its stops, or at the main if it has none. Cover the drain.
  2. Remove the handle and trim, pull the retaining clip, and pull the cartridge. A stuck 1225 needs a cartridge puller; do not pry on the valve body.
  3. Read the number on the cartridge. If it is a 1255 or 4000, Moen says replace it rather than regreasing it.
  4. For a 1225, wipe off sediment and mineral deposits, then coat the o-rings and stem with silicone grease only.
  5. Reinstall in the same orientation, reinstall the clip, turn the water on, and work the handle. If it is still stiff, or a seal is torn, replace the cartridge.

When to stop. If the cartridge will not come out with a puller, stop before you damage the valve body.

The part that fixes it

The puller helps if the old cartridge is stuck. The repair kit and cartridges fit valves that use the Moen 1225.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • It is a Moen pull-push shower handle that is hard to operate.
  • The number on the cartridge if you saw it, and whether you regreased or replaced it.
  • Whether the cartridge came out with a puller or is stuck.
