You can fix this
A single-handle shower that drips from the head or spout with the handle off has a worn cartridge. Moen, Delta and others each name the cartridge to replace.
In a single-handle tub and shower valve, one cartridge controls flow and temperature, and its seals wear until water seeps past with the handle off. Moen's fix for a leaking Posi-Temp valve is the 1222 cartridge, and for Moentrol and Standard valves it is the 1225 or 1200. Delta's fix for a 1300 or 1400 Monitor valve leaking from the showerhead or spout is the RP19804. EPA notes a showerhead leaking 10 drips a minute wastes more than 500 gallons a year.
When to stop. If the cartridge will not come out, or the drip continues with a new cartridge, the valve body may be the problem. That is a plumber's job.
Match the cartridge to the valve: Moen Posi-Temp 1222, Moentrol and Standard 1225, Delta 1300/1400 RP19804, Delta 13/14 RP46074. Pfister and Kohler cross-references come from retailer listings.
