Likely cause: worn seats, springs or stem on the leaking side
Two and three-handle tub and shower valves drip when the seat, spring or stem on one side wears. Find the side, then replace its seat and stem.
Why this happens
Delta's guidance for two and three-handle tub and shower valves is that worn seats, springs or stem assemblies are the primary culprits when they leak. The stem presses against a seat to stop the water; once either wears, water slips past with the handle closed. Delta adds that on valves more than 10 to 15 years old, the faucet body itself may have developed a leak that parts will not fix.
How to fix it
- Shut off the water to the shower at its stops, or at the house main if it has none, and cover the drain.
- Remove the hot handle, unscrew the chrome bonnet nut, and pull out the stem and the stem extender behind it.
- Remove the seat and spring, wipe out any debris, and install new ones. Delta's RP4993 package has two sets.
- Reinstall the stem, turn the water back on, and test. If it still drips, repeat on the cold side.
- If a new seat does not stop it, replace the stem. Match it by brand, length and broach (the splined tip the handle fits on) using the identification index below.
When to stop. If both replacements fail on an old valve, Delta's advice is to replace the entire tub and shower valve. That means opening the wall, so call a licensed plumber.
