Vent, Valve & Volt
Shower drips when off, or the tub spout runs with the shower on

You can fix this

Likely cause: a worn diverter stem

On a three-handle valve the middle handle is the diverter. When its stem or seat wears, water slips past to the tub spout while the shower runs.

Why this happens

A three-handle tub and shower valve uses a middle diverter stem to send water up to the showerhead. Delta's guidance for two and three-handle tub and shower valves names worn seats, springs and stem assemblies as the primary culprits when they leak. When the diverter stem or its seat wears, it no longer closes off the spout fully.

How to fix it

  1. Shut off the water at the house main, since the diverter carries both hot and cold. Cover the drain.
  2. Remove the middle handle, unscrew the bonnet nut and pull out the diverter stem.
  3. Look at the seat in the valve body. If it is pitted or worn, replace it along with the stem.
  4. Match the new diverter stem by brand and length using the identification index below, then install it and reassemble.
  5. Turn the water on, run the shower, and check the spout. A pencil-thin stream is still normal.

When to stop. If the stem will not back out, or the seat will not come out, stop before you damage the valve body.

The part that fixes it

Diverter stems are brand-specific. Measure the old stem's length and match the brand before ordering.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • It is a three-handle valve, and a heavy stream comes from the spout with the shower on.
  • Whether you replaced the diverter stem or seat already.
  • The valve brand and age.
