Shower goes hot or cold when someone flushes
A shower that jumps hot or cold when a toilet flushes is usually a pressure-balancing valve that has stopped doing its job, or a valve that never had one. A few questions sort out which, and which cartridge your valve takes.

Every question and answer on this page, in order
Question 1: When does the temperature change?
Have someone flush a toilet while you hold your hand in the shower stream, then try again with nothing else running.
- Right when a toilet flushes or another tap runs: go to question 2
- It slowly drifts colder over several minutes, even with nothing else running: Likely cause: the water heater, not the shower valve
Question 2: How big is the swing?
- Big: it turns scalding or ice cold for a few seconds: go to question 3
- Small: a little warmer or cooler, then it settles: Probably normal: a small shift that settles
Question 3: Is your shower valve a pressure-balancing type?
Pressure-balancing valves include Moen Posi-Temp and Moentrol, Delta Monitor, and Kohler Rite-Temp. The brand is often on the handle or the trim plate.
- Yes, or it is one of those brands with a single handle: go to question 4
- No, it is an older plain mixing valve: Likely cause: a valve with no pressure balancing
- I'm not sure: go to question 4
Question 4: What brand is the shower valve?
Look for a logo on the handle, the trim plate or the center cap. If there is none, a photo of the handle helps a plumber or a parts counter tell.
- Moen: Likely cause: a worn or stuck Moen balancing cartridge
- Delta: Likely cause: a worn Delta Monitor cartridge
- Kohler, Pfister, Grohe, Gerber or another brand: Likely cause: a worn pressure-balancing cartridge
- No brand I can find: Likely cause: a valve with no pressure balancing
