Vent, Valve & Volt
Shower goes hot or cold when someone flushes

You can fix this

Likely cause: a worn or stuck Moen balancing cartridge

In a Moen pressure-balancing valve, the part that evens out a pressure drop lives in the cartridge. If it is worn or stuck, a flush hits you full force.

Why this happens

Symmons explains that a pressure-balancing valve reacts to changing water pressure so you are not scalded when someone flushes a toilet or runs cold water elsewhere. Moen lists a stuck balancing spool among the causes of temperature trouble on its tub and shower valves. On a Posi-Temp valve that part is in the 1222 cartridge; on a Moentrol valve Moen names the 1225 cartridge and a separate 1423 balancing spool about the size of a quarter. A big swing with every flush points at that balancing part.

How to fix it

  1. Shut off the water to the shower. Moen says the supply must be off before the handle comes off. If the valve has no stops of its own, use the main shutoff.
  2. Remove the handle and trim. Confirm whether you have a Posi-Temp or a Moentrol valve from Moen's support pages before you order.
  3. Pull the retaining clip and remove the cartridge. A 1222 cartridge comes out with a removal tool; a 1225 that will not budge needs a cartridge puller.
  4. Install the new cartridge in the same orientation, reinstall the clip, and turn the water back on.
  5. Test with a thermometer at full hot. Keep the hottest water at 120F or less, as Moen and CPSC advise, and adjust the limit stop by following your valve's guide if needed.

When to stop. If the cartridge will not come out with the tool or puller, stop. A cracked valve body means opening the wall.

The part that fixes it

Posi-Temp valves take the 1222 cartridge; Moentrol valves take the 1225. Confirm your valve type first.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • It is a Moen single-handle shower, and the temperature jumps when a toilet flushes.
  • Whether it is a Posi-Temp or Moentrol valve, if you know.
  • Whether the shower has its own stops or you have to shut off the main.
  • Whether you already replaced the cartridge.
