Ceiling fan not working, or the light works but the fan won't spin

You can fix this

Likely cause: the pull chain was set to off

The fan's pull chain was in its off position. Cycling it brought the fan back.

Why this happens

Hunter lists a pull chain that is not in the on position among the reasons a fan stops working while its light still works. Hunter's checklist also covers the wall switch, the breaker and the remote batteries, all of which you can check without opening the fan.

How to fix it

  1. Leave the chain on the speed you want.
  2. If the fan also has a wall control or remote, make sure it is set to on as well.
  3. If the chain feels loose, slips or does not click, stop pulling it. A worn pull-chain switch is replaced by a licensed electrician.

If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician

  • If it stops again: that the pull chain cycles but the fan will not start on some settings.
  • Whether the chain feels loose or no longer clicks.
