Ceiling fan not working, or the light works but the fan won't spin

You can fix this

Likely cause: no power reaching the fan

If neither the fan nor its light works, check the wall switch and the breaker first.

Why this happens

Hunter's troubleshooting for a fan that stopped working starts with the power: the wall switch and the circuit breaker. If the breaker has tripped, the fan and light both go dead. Hunter lists no power at the switch among the problems that call for an electrician once the breaker is ruled out.

How to fix it

  1. Make sure every wall switch that could control the fan is on.
  2. At the panel, open only the hinged door. Never remove the metal cover behind it; that cover is for electricians. Keep your hands dry and do not stand on a wet floor.
  3. Look for a handle sitting in the middle or out of line with the others. Some breakers trip all the way to OFF, so check every handle, and do not trust the labels; panels are often mislabeled.
  4. Stand to the side of the panel and turn your face away. Push the handle firmly to OFF, then back to ON. Do this once.
  5. Try the fan again. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and see the breaker keeps tripping guide. If the breaker is fine and the fan is still dead, call a licensed electrician.

If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician

  • Neither the fan nor the light works, and the wall switch is on.
  • Whether a breaker was tripped and whether it held.
  • Whether it stopped after a power outage or storm.
  • The fan brand and model, and whether it uses a remote.
