Likely cause: dampers, duct leaks or balancing
When one room stays uncomfortable with open registers and doors, the cause is usually in the ductwork. An HVAC technician can measure and balance it.
Why this happens
The LibreTexts HVAC course lists unbalanced airflow, poorly insulated ducts and damper settings as causes of uneven temperatures. Hoffmann Brothers adds closed dampers, leaky ducts and duct sizing. Fixing these means measuring airflow at the registers and adjusting or sealing the ductwork.
What to do right now
- Keep the room's registers and door open in the meantime.
- Don't close vents in other rooms to push air to this one.
- Note when the room is worst (time of day, heating or cooling season).
- Call an HVAC technician to check dampers, duct leaks and airflow.
What to tell the HVAC technician
- Which room is off, whether it's too hot or too cold, and in which season.
- That registers and doors are open and the filter is clean.
- Whether the room is over a garage, in an addition, or on an upper floor.
- Any dampers you know of on the ductwork.
