You can fix this
Likely cause: closed doors or closed vents elsewhere
Air needs a path back to the system. Closed doors and vents closed in other rooms upset that balance.
Why this happens
Energy.gov advises keeping interior doors open to allow air to circulate freely. Tom's Guide quotes HVAC experts saying that closing vents in unused rooms can create pressure issues for your system, with risks that include coil freezing, duct leaks and short cycling. Opening things back up often evens out the temperatures.
How to fix it
- Leave the door to the problem room open, or open it whenever the system runs.
- Reopen any vents you closed in other rooms, including unused rooms.
- Make sure return grilles throughout the house are open and clear.
- Give the system a day of normal running, then compare the room again.
When to stop. If the room is still off after a day with doors and vents open, call an HVAC technician to check dampers and ductwork.
If this does not fix it, tell the HVAC technician
- Which doors stay closed and which vents you had closed.
- Whether the room improved after opening them.
