You can fix this
Likely cause: LEDs and a dimmer that don't match
LED bulbs that are not dimmable, or a dimmer that is not rated for LEDs, flicker. Swap to dimmable LEDs first.
Why this happens
Pedernales Electric Cooperative, Family Handyman and Bob Vila all point to LED bulbs on an incompatible dimmer as a common cause of flicker in one fixture. Mixing LED and other bulb types on one dimmer can cause the same problem. Using bulbs marked dimmable, and a dimmer rated for LEDs, usually fixes it.
How to fix it
- Turn the switch off and let the bulbs cool.
- Replace the bulbs with LEDs marked dimmable, all the same type on that dimmer.
- Turn the dimmer up to full and then down slowly. Note where, if anywhere, it still flickers.
- If dimmable bulbs still flicker, the dimmer may not be rated for LEDs. Replacing a dimmer is wiring work for a licensed electrician.
When to stop. If the dimmer feels hot, buzzes loudly or smells, turn the breaker off and call a licensed electrician.
If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician
- The dimmer brand and model if it is printed on it, and the bulbs you tried.
- At what dimmer setting it flickers.
- How many fixtures and bulbs the dimmer controls.
