Lights flickering: one fixture or the whole house?

This one needs a licensed pro

Likely cause: the fixture, socket or switch

A new bulb did not fix it, so the problem is in the socket, the fixture, the switch or a connection. That is a licensed electrician's job.

Why this happens

Once the bulb is ruled out, flicker guides from Family Handyman and This Old House move on to the socket, the switch and loose connections. Pedernales Electric Cooperative suggests unplugging devices one at a time first, since something plugged in, even a faulty phone charger, can cause flicker. CPSC lists flickering lights as a warning sign in homes with aluminum branch wiring.

What to do right now

  1. Unplug devices on the same circuit one at a time and watch whether the flicker stops. If it does, stop using the last device you unplugged.
  2. If the flicker continues, stop using that fixture where you can and leave the switch off.
  3. Call a licensed electrician. Do not take the switch or fixture apart.

When to stop. Popping, crackling, a burning smell or a warm switch: turn the breaker off now.

What to tell the licensed electrician

  • Which fixture flickers, which switch controls it, and that a new bulb did not help.
  • Whether it happens all the time or only when something else runs.
  • The age of the house, and whether you have seen AL or Aluminum printed on cable jackets.
  • Whether any breaker for that area has tripped, and the indicator light if it is an AFCI.
