Vent, Valve & Volt
Thermostat screen is blank

You can fix this

Likely cause: the thermostat isn't seated on its base

If the thermostat face isn't pressed fully onto its wall base, it loses contact with its power. Push it back on until it clicks.

Why this happens

Honeywell lists a thermostat that isn't seated among the causes of a blank screen, and Google's Nest help says to push the display onto the base until it clicks. Faces get knocked loose by cleaning, bumping or a recent battery change.

How to fix it

  1. Line the thermostat face up with its wall base.
  2. Press it straight on until it clicks or sits flush on every edge.
  3. Don't pull wires out of the base or touch them. Trane says you can remove the faceplate but not to touch the wires.
  4. Give it a minute to power up, then set the mode and temperature you want.

When to stop. If a wire has come loose from the base, leave it alone and call an HVAC technician.

If this does not fix it, tell the HVAC technician

  • That the thermostat face was loose on its base.
  • Whether the screen came back after reseating it.
