A breaker that keeps tripping: call an HVAC technician
A breaker that trips again after one reset is protecting against an electrical fault. Leave it off.
Why this happens
Honeywell lists a tripped breaker among the causes of a blank thermostat. HVAC.com's advice when the breaker keeps tripping is not to try turning the system on again and to contact an HVAC technician, and Lennox says a breaker that re-trips points to an overloaded circuit.
What to do right now
- Leave the breaker in the off position.
- Don't reset it again or swap in a fuse of a different size.
- Keep the furnace or air handler panels closed.
- Call an HVAC technician.
What to tell the HVAC technician
- Which breaker trips and how quickly after a reset.
- Whether it started after a power outage, a storm or a new thermostat install.
- The brand and model of the thermostat and of the furnace or air handler.
