AC leaking water inside the house

You can fix this

Likely cause: ice melting off the coil

If the coil or lines are icing up, the water is melt running off faster than the drain can carry it. Fix the freezing and the leak stops.

Why this happens

Trane lists a frozen evaporator coil among the causes of water leaking from an indoor unit. When the ice melts, a lot of water comes off at once and can overflow the drain pan. Carrier says to watch the drain line as a frozen AC thaws.

How to fix it

  1. Set the thermostat from Cool to Off, then set the fan to On to thaw the ice.
  2. Put towels around the indoor unit and empty the drain pan with a wet/dry vac if it fills.
  3. Don't chip at the ice or use a heat source on it.
  4. Work through the AC freezing up troubleshooter to find why it froze.

If this does not fix it, tell the HVAC technician

  • That you saw ice on the coil or lines along with the water.
  • Whether the filter was dirty and whether any vents were closed.
  • Whether it has frozen before.
