Toilet flush is weak or won't flush all the way

You can fix this

Likely cause: the refill tube has come loose

If the refill tube is not feeding the overflow tube, the bowl does not refill properly and the next flush is weak. Clip it back in.

Why this happens

The refill tube sends water down the overflow tube to refill the bowl after each flush. Family Handyman says that if the fill tube falls off or misses the overflow tube, the bowl will not fill and your next flush will be wimpy.

How to fix it

  1. Push the refill tube back onto the nipple on the fill valve if it has come off.
  2. Clip the other end to the overflow tube so it sprays down inside it. Do not push it deep into the tube.
  3. Flush and watch the refill tube send water into the overflow tube.
  4. Flush again and compare.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • The refill tube was off and you reattached it.
  • Whether the flush improved.
