Vent, Valve & Volt
Shower won't get hot, or gets too hot

You can fix this

Likely cause: a stuck or worn cartridge

If the handle reaches full hot and the water stays warm, or it is hot even at the cold end, the balancing part inside the cartridge is likely stuck. Replace the cartridge.

Why this happens

Moen says a balancing spool may be stuck when a tub and shower valve will not deliver hot water. Moen's Posi-Temp guidance is to replace the 1222 cartridge if pressure drops when switching from cold to hot, and to replace the 1225 on Moentrol valves. A retailer guide to Kohler parts ties shower temperature loss to the Rite-Temp pressure-balancing cartridge.

How to fix it

  1. Shut off the water to the shower at its stops or at the main.
  2. Remove the handle and trim, and find the brand and model on the valve. Take a photo.
  3. Match the cartridge to the valve before you order. The identification index below helps if there is no number.
  4. Remove the retaining clip or bonnet nut and pull the cartridge. Note how it faced.
  5. Install the new cartridge the same way, reassemble, turn the water on and check full hot with a thermometer. Reset the limit stop to 120F or less by following your valve's guide.

When to stop. If the cartridge will not come out, or the valve body looks corroded or cracked, stop. Valve body work means opening the wall.

The part that fixes it

Each valve takes its own cartridge: Moen Posi-Temp 1222, Moentrol 1225, Delta 1300/1400 RP19804, Delta 13/14 RP46074, and so on. The Pfister and Kohler cross-references come from retailer listings, so confirm against your valve.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • The sinks get hot but the shower does not, or it stays hot at the cold end.
  • The handle reaches full hot, so the limit stop is not the cause.
  • The valve brand and model, and whether you replaced the cartridge.
