Vent, Valve & Volt
Low water pressure at one faucet or the whole house

You can fix this

Likely cause: a clogged aerator or hose screen

Grit and minerals collect in the aerator at the tip of the spout and choke the flow. Cleaning it takes a few minutes.

Why this happens

Delta says debris might be clogging the aerator or filter and recommends cleaning it, with a white vinegar soak for stubborn deposits. Moen's first step for low flow on both hot and cold is to remove the aerator and rinse off any debris. On pull-out and pull-down faucets, Moen also says to check the screen between the hose and the wand.

How to fix it

  1. Close the drain so small parts cannot fall in.
  2. Unscrew the aerator from the spout tip by hand, counterclockwise as seen from below. Wrap it in a cloth if you need pliers.
  3. Rinse the screen and parts. Soak crusted pieces in white vinegar, then rinse again.
  4. On a pull-out or pull-down faucet, unscrew the spray head from the hose and clean the screen there too.
  5. Reassemble and test. If the flow is still weak, the cartridge is next.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • One faucet has low flow on both hot and cold.
  • You cleaned the aerator and any hose screen, and whether it helped.
