Likely cause: a worn washer, seat or stem
Compression faucets stop water by screwing a rubber washer down onto a brass seat. When either wears, the faucet drips. Replace the seat and spring, or the stem, on the leaking side.
Why this happens
Delta's two-handle lavatory guidance says the seats and springs wear with normal use and cause a spout drip, and that if a new seat does not stop it, the stem itself should be replaced. On older compression faucets the brass seat can pit so badly that a new washer cannot seal against it, which is why the seat is replaced along with the stem.
How to fix it
- Shut off the stop for the leaking side and open the faucet to release pressure. Close the drain.
- Remove the handle screw and handle, then unscrew the bonnet nut and back the stem out.
- Lift out the seat and spring (or the bibb washer and the brass seat) with a pencil tip, Allen key or seat wrench. Wipe the bore clean.
- Set the new spring and seat, or thread in the new bibb seat, and reinstall the stem. Delta notes the stem must go back in the correct orientation: knob handles with the stop toward the spout, lever handles with the stop to the right.
- Hand-tighten the bonnet, reinstall the handle, reopen the stop and test. If it still drips, replace the stem.
When to stop. If a seat will not come out, the stem threads are stripped, or the drip continues after a new stem and seat, the valve body is the problem. That is a plumber's job.

Bibb seats are sized by thread; match the seat to the faucet before ordering. Stems are brand-specific and often different for hot and cold.
