Vent, Valve & Volt
Faucet dripping when it's off

You can fix this

Likely cause: a worn stem on the dripping side

Quarter-turn two-handle faucets use a ceramic disc stem on each side. The side that drips needs a new stem, matched hot or cold.

Why this happens

Pfister's guidance for a dripping two-handle faucet is that one or both cartridges in the handles need replacing. Ceramic disc stems have two polished plates that rotate against each other; once the plates or the seal beneath them wear, the faucet drips with the handle closed. Hot and cold stems usually turn in opposite directions, so match the side.

How to fix it

  1. Shut off the stop for the dripping side (or both) and open the faucet to release pressure. Close the drain.
  2. Pop the index cap, remove the handle screw and lift the handle.
  3. Unscrew the bonnet nut and lift the stem straight out. Keep track of hot versus cold.
  4. Match the old stem by brand, length and the number of splines on the broach before you order. The identification index below walks through measuring it.
  5. Install the new stem, hand-tighten the bonnet, reinstall the handle, reopen the stop slowly and test.

The part that fixes it

Two-handle ceramic stems are brand-specific and sold as hot or cold. Buy the pair if both sides are the same age.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • It is a two-handle faucet with quarter-turn handles, dripping from the spout.
  • Which side you isolated as the leaking side.
  • The faucet brand and a photo of the stem if you removed it.
