Vent, Valve & Volt
Outlet not working, and you're not sure why

You can fix this

Likely cause: the device or its cord, not the outlet

If the device does not work in any outlet, your wiring is probably fine and the device or its cord has failed.

Why this happens

This Old House lists a damaged plug among the reasons an outlet seems dead. When a device fails in every outlet you try, the problem travels with the device. CPSC warns against using cords that are damaged, so a frayed, cracked or scorched cord or plug should be retired, not taped up.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the outlet works by plugging in a different lamp or charger you know is good.
  2. Look over the device's cord and plug for cracks, fraying, bent prongs or scorch marks. Do not use it if you find any.
  3. Check the device's own switch, fuse or reset button if it has one, following its manual.
  4. Repair or replace the device. Do not use a damaged cord.

When to stop. If the outlet the device was plugged into is scorched, warm or smells like burning, turn that breaker off and call a licensed electrician.

If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician

  • The device did not work in any outlet, but other devices work in the outlet.
  • Any marks, heat or smell you noticed on the plug or cord.
  • If an outlet also looked scorched where the device was plugged in, say so.
