GFCI outlet won't reset

You can fix this

Likely cause: no power from a tripped breaker

A GFCI cannot reset without power. Reset the breaker once, then press RESET on the GFCI.

Why this happens

Leviton's first step for a GFCI stuck in reset lockout is to confirm it has power, since a tripped breaker or a loose connection upstream will stop it from resetting. Restore power first, then reset.

How to fix it

  1. At the panel, open only the hinged door. Never remove the metal cover behind it; that cover is for electricians. Keep your hands dry and do not stand on a wet floor.
  2. Look for a handle sitting in the middle or out of line with the others. Some breakers trip all the way to OFF, so check every handle, and do not trust the labels; panels are often mislabeled.
  3. Stand to the side of the panel and turn your face away. Push the handle firmly to OFF, then back to ON. Do this once.
  4. With dry hands, press RESET on the GFCI firmly until it clicks and stays in.
  5. Plug in a lamp to confirm. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and go to the breaker keeps tripping guide.

When to stop. If the breaker trips again or the GFCI still will not reset with the breaker on, call a licensed electrician.

If this does not fix it, tell the licensed electrician

  • Which breaker was tripped and whether it held after one reset.
  • Whether the GFCI reset once power was back.
  • What was plugged in when it tripped.
