AC running but blowing warm air

You can fix this

Likely cause: a clogged condensate drain

Trane lists a clogged drain line as a cause of warm air. Many systems have a float switch that stops cooling when the drain backs up.

Why this happens

As your AC cools, it pulls water out of the air and sends it down a drain line. Trane lists a clogged drain line among the reasons an AC stops blowing cold air, and Honeywell notes that a float switch in the pan can cut power when water backs up. Clearing the line usually gets cooling back.

How to fix it

  1. Set the thermostat to Off.
  2. Soak up standing water around the indoor unit with towels or a wet/dry vac.
  3. Follow the steps in the AC leaking water troubleshooter to vacuum and flush the drain line with vinegar.
  4. Once the pan drains, set the thermostat back to Cool and confirm the outdoor unit starts.

If this does not fix it, tell the HVAC technician

  • Where the water was and whether the AC had shut itself off.
  • What you did to clear the drain and whether it came back.
  • Any rust in the drain pan or water damage nearby.
