Likely cause: a leaking tank
Water that keeps coming back from under the tank, with no fitting to blame, usually means the tank itself is leaking. Tanks are replaced, not repaired.
Why this happens
A. O. Smith says leaks at the base are often the first indication of a serious problem, and that if the tank is confirmed to have a leak, it should be replaced. Its anode rod, which protects the tank from corrosion, usually lasts 3 to 5 years. A. O. Smith puts average heater life at 8 to 12 years, and energy.gov says storage heaters last 10 to 15 years.
What to do right now
- Turn off the power at the breaker, or turn the gas control to off, as A. O. Smith advises.
- Close the cold water supply valve to the heater to stop more water entering the tank.
- Put towels or a pan down and move anything that can be damaged. A. O. Smith notes even small leaks can cause significant water damage.
- Call a licensed plumber or an authorized service provider about replacement.
What to tell the plumber
- Water keeps coming back from under the tank with no fitting leaking.
- Gas or electric, and the make, model and age from the data plate.
- Whether you turned off the power or gas and the water.
