Pipes banging in the walls

Banging pipes are most often water hammer, the shock you hear when moving water is stopped fast, but loose pipes and high pressure can make the same noise. Let's sort it by when the bang happens and whether it is one fixture or the whole house.

Before you start. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. If water is leaking, shut off the main water valve by hand and never force it. Ready.gov says not to touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
