Garbage disposal hums but won't spin, or won't turn on

You can fix this

Likely cause: a loose connection

A leak at the dishwasher hose or the drain elbow is usually a loose clamp or loose screws. Snug them up. A leak at the top, where the disposal meets the sink, is a plumber's job.

Why this happens

Moen says a wet paper towel at a connection means the leak comes from that spot. Its fixes are a tight dishwasher connector and clamp, and snug screws on the drain discharge elbow. Bob Vila says the most common places to find a leak are the lines that run to and from the disposal. A leak at the top is different: Lowe's says it happens when the seal between the sink drain and the disposal fails, and Family Handyman notes that water from that top gasket drips down and can look like a leak from the base.

How to fix it

  1. Switch the disposal off and unplug it, or turn its breaker off. Bob Vila says to unplug it before you check for leaks to prevent the risk of electric shock. Do it with dry hands, and not while you are standing in water. If the outlet, the plug or the cord is wet, do not touch them. Turn the breaker off at the panel instead.
  2. Dry the disposal and the pipes with a towel.
  3. Put the stopper in and fill the sink. Wrap paper towels around the top of the disposal, the drain elbow on the side and the dishwasher hose connection. Pull the stopper and see which towel gets wet.
  4. Dishwasher hose: check that the clamp is tight. Moen says to replace the connector or clamp if it is damaged or deteriorated.
  5. Drain elbow: tighten any loose screws where the elbow meets the side of the disposal.
  6. Other pipe joints nearby: InSinkErator says to tighten them as needed, and to find a certified plumber if you want help.
  7. Dry everything and run the water again to check your work. Keep the disposal unplugged, or its breaker off, until the leak has stopped and the plug, the cord and the outlet are completely dry. CDC says electrical equipment must be completely dry before it goes back into service. Then, with dry hands and the wall switch off, plug it back in. If water got inside the outlet, leave its breaker off and call a licensed electrician.
  8. If the wet towel is the one at the top, where the disposal meets the sink, call a plumber to reseal it.

When to stop. If tightening does not stop it, call a plumber. Moen says a damaged elbow gasket can let water travel inside the shell and drain out at the bottom plate.

If this does not fix it, tell the plumber

  • Which spot leaks: the top at the sink, the drain elbow or the dishwasher hose.
  • Whether it leaks only when the dishwasher runs.
  • What you already tightened.
  • The brand and model from the label on the unit.
